Guitar Hero World Tour – First Wii Game to use DLC

Sure we’ve seen the Pay-to-Play program instituted for WiiWare but this news confirms that Guitar Hero: World Tour (slated to release sometime this summer) will feature downloadable content as part of the new Wi-Fi Connection program.

Here’s a big long press release for you. Heh.

New State of the Art Wireless Instruments Innovative Music Studio Lets Players Compose, Record, Edit and Share Music – Biggest Selection of On-Disc Music with All Master Tracks Robust New Eight – Player “Battle of the Bands” Mode – First Game Ever in the Guitar Hero Franchise to Allow In-Game Downloadable Content on Wii

When the house lights go down this fall, a new generation of axe shredders, drummers and fearless frontmen will come together and rock with Activision, Inc.’s (Nasdaq: ATVI) Guitar Hero® World Tour. The latest installment from the #1 best-selling video game franchise of 2007, Guitar Hero World Tour will transform music gaming by marrying Guitar Hero’s® exhilarating guitar gameplay, with a cooperative band experience that combines the most advanced wireless instruments with revolutionary new online and offline gameplay modes. The game will feature a slick newly redesigned guitar, a genuine electronic drum kit and a microphone, as well as an innovative Music Studio music creator that lets players compose, record, edit and share their own rock and roll anthems, along with online Band Career and 8-player “Battle of the Bands.”

Delivering the largest on-disc set list in a music-rhythm game to-date, Guitar Hero World Tour is comprised entirely of master recordings from some of the greatest classic and modern rock bands of all-time including Van Halen, Linkin Park, The Eagles, Sublime and many more. Additionally, the game will offer significantly more localized downloadable music than ever before on all of the next-generation consoles. Budding rock stars will also be given creative license to fully customize everything from their characters’ appearance and instruments to their band’s logo and album covers.

In addition to a newly designed more responsive guitar controller and microphone, Guitar Hero World Tour will deliver the most realistic drum experience ever in a video game with an authentic electronic drum kit. Featuring three drum pads, two raised cymbals and a bass kick pedal, the drum controller combines larger and quieter, velocity-sensitive drum heads with soft rubber construction to deliver authentic bounce back and is easy to set up, move, break down and store.

“Guitar Hero has set the standard for music-based gaming and with Guitar Hero World Tour and the game’s groundbreaking Music Studio, we are once again delivering unprecedented innovation that has the potential to revolutionize consumer generated music, much in the same way that video sharing hubs have driven user generated video,” said Dusty Welch, Head of Publishing for RedOctane. “With the introduction of our advanced high-quality new wireless instruments, in-depth customization options and advanced online functionality, the game enables music fans and gamers globally to share in the most social and expressive music experience ever.”

Guitar Hero World Tour delivers more ways to play than ever before. Virtual musicians can live out their rock and roll fantasies by playing either a single instrument, or any combination of instruments, in addition to the full band experience. In addition to all of the online gameplay modes from Guitar Hero® III: Legends of Rock, Guitar Hero World Tour introduces Battle of the Bands mode which allows eight players to join online and challenge each other band-to-band to determine who is the best of the best. In the Band modes, up to four players can jam together, online or off, as they progress through the game, and in single-player Career Mode, players can jam on any of the instruments in branching venue progression enabling them to rock out in the order of their choice.

The game’s innovative new Music Studio lets players express their musical creativity by giving them access to a full compliment of tools to create digital music from scratch, utilizing all of the instruments, and then play their compositions in the game. Music creators will also be able to share their recordings with their friends online through GHTunes™ where other gamers can download their unique compositions and play them.

Guitar Hero World Tour is being developed by Neversoft Entertainment for the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system. The Wii™ version is being developed by Vicarious Visions. The PlayStation®2 computer entertainment system version is being developed by Budcat. The game is not yet rated by the ESRB.

What do you guys think? I can certainly say I saw Guitar Hero being the first Wii game (on disk) that would feature DLC. I’m not surprised at all, to be honest. You?

Balance Board Predecessors that Failed

We’ve been hearing talk about the Balance Board a lot, haven’t we?

GamePro takes a careful examination at 7 foot-based controllers that have failed in some ways more than one. Of course, you can imagine that predictables like the DDR Mat would appear (hey! that’s the only DDR I have and I think they work great! XD) but some other unlikely candidates make the list also.

Ubisoft announces Shaun White Snowboarding!

Sweet landing!

I’m really excited to see how they execute this, and how it’ll rival EA’s SSX Blur follow-up that’s coming up soon.. Or maybe I should keep my lips sealed on that one. 😉

Here’s the Press Release coming in from Ubidays yesterday:

Today Ubisoft announces the development of Shaun White Snowboarding, a title destined to break all former action sports video game notions and redefine the action sports genre. The game will appear on the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, the PLAYSTATION®3 computer entertainment system, Windows-based PC, and the Wii(TM) home video game system from Nintendo, and is scheduled for release in Holiday 2008.

Powered by the award-winning Assassin’s Creed(TM) engine for Xbox 360 and the PLAYSTATION 3 system, Shaun White Snowboarding truly captures the action sports lifestyle. Shaun White Snowboarding is being developed from the ground up for the Wii system, taking full advantage of the Wii Balance Board(TM) accessory and featuring its own unique storyline and adventure with Shaun White.

“Shaun White Snowboarding will turn all of the traditional ideas and experiences of past action sports titles upside down,” said Tony Key, senior vice president of sales and marketing at Ubisoft. “The combination of Ubisoft’s innovation approach and the influence of Shaun’s lifestyle and perspective make this gaming experience like no other.”
Developed in close collaboration with Shaun White, Olympic Gold Medalist and eight-time X Games Gold Medalist, Shaun White Snowboarding allows players to enter a world of total freedom, where they can create their own experience and choose how, where, and with whom they want to ride.

Key Features of Shaun White Snowboarding for Xbox 360, the PLAYSTATION 3 system, and Windows-based PC:

• Open World Mountains: Choose how you ride in open-world mountains across the world. Conquer extreme peak conditions, create your own paths in the back country, or compete with fellow riders in the terrain parks.

• Your Friends Are Always Around: Play in a world where your friends are always around. Do your own runs on mountains populated by real gamers, or join your friends for a quick session from any mountain.

• More than Just Snowboarding: Have fun with your friends on and off the board! Throw snowballs, hike to access secret spots, film your friends doing ripping tricks. You can also upload your videos online to share with the world.

• Ride Your Way: Express yourself through tricks, riding styles, and highly customizable avatars – both in single-player and in the online world. Use the intuitive dual analog control to pull off a huge variety of tricks that express your style.

• Next-Gen Technology: Built on the Assassin’s Creed engine, this game creates a massive world with gorgeous visuals and realistic NPC interactions. This is also the first time a snowboarding game is completely driven by physics instead of animation.

• Authentic Snowboarding: Ubisoft has worked closely with Shaun White to infuse the gaming experience with authenticity, personality and humor. Shaun is a friend and mentor in the game, and will help you with your skills. And, if you are deemed worthy, you may even be able to play as Shaun in the game …

Key features of Shaun White Snowboarding for the Wii system:

• Exclusive storyline: Everybody loves a road trip! You and your crew travel the world to participate in a variety of the largest and craziest events to become a world-renowned athlete. Life on the road to success wouldn’t be the same without the support of your friends, who will always be there to help you out and keep your head on your shoulders. Stand together with your friends – both in the game and in the living room – and you will be able to conquer the madness that fame brings.

• Go on a globetrotting adventure with Shaun White as your partner – Ubisoft worked in close contact with Shaun White in order to infuse the experience with the most authentic elements of his riding style, personality and sense of humor. Shaun will act as a good-natured friend and mentor to the player, hooking him up with the right friends to conquer challenges together, introduce him to new locales, or simply be around to share in a laugh.

• Wii Balance Board Integration – Get yourself into the game like never before by using the Wii Board to control your rider. Control your carves, jumps and grinds with the intuitiveness and fun of having a snowboard in your own living room.

• Everyone plays, no one waits – Engage in a seamlessly integrated multiplayer experience for two to four players, where every player is active in the game at all times.

• Get together your crew – In the world of snowboarding, it pays to have friends on your side. Your crew of friends will always be there to help you by offering you unique abilities to improve both your riding and keeping you grounded with friendly pranks; filming all the antics along the way.

• Fame and Respect – Getting your name out there by doing well as a pro snowboarder is bound to get you some recognition. As your fame grows, so too does your ability to take on bigger and bigger challenges, from new mountains to more prestigious events and competitions. Fame, however, isn’t everything. You’ll need to gain your friends’ respect by riding with style in order to gain their support; they will help you find hidden areas, share their favorite music tracks and keep you laughing.

Balance Board integration is gonna be great! And pulling off tricks seems quite interesting to say the least.

And we already got a preview from 1up. Hm, interesting:

Oh and the scenery: SSX Blur all over again. 😀

What’s been your experience with Gamestop?

Tons of people have complained to me about how they absolutely hate Gamestop with a passion… Where do you stand? Are they as bad as everyone proclaims them to be or have they simply made a bad name for themselves?

Take a gander at this article for some food for thought:

The writer examines 5 different things that make Gamestop “unbearable”. Now, to be honest, some of his arguments are flawed and aren’t properly based or if they are, they’re not supported properly. However, the 5th support is something noone can deny. The case is true even here in Canada with EB Games.

But do you think people are being too hard on them?

Wii Fit can outlast GTA? Uh-oh.

Hopefully I don’t get in the cross-fire for reporting this. xD

Aussie-Nintendo conducted a intereview with someone (dunno who the guy is) who made this statement:

AB: Do you think [Wii Fit’s] actually a bigger game in terms of the mainstream than GTA?

RL: Long term, it will absolutely be bigger. I’m quite open to say that. We will continue to support Wii Fit because its an important product for us and its an important product for our consumers now. Long term, definitely.

Don’t shoot the messenger, now!! But what do you guys think?

LostWinds off to a great start on the WiiWare Service

Taking place as the 3rd-most popular title as of May 29th, word of LostWinds’ innovative, success and design work has spread across many online sources either through Reviews, hands-on impressions, or rants, sometimes a mixture of all of the above. But now, a regular columnist from Gamasutra examines LostWinds’ success with a more design-related focus, testifying to its wonderous abilities and innovation as an examplary source for good for further developers down the road. Can one or more developers do better than LostWinds has in making a good name for itself? Only time will tell but one thing’s for sure, we can certainly hope that the sequel (yes, it has already been confirmed!) will rectify the Replay Value that many felt were lacking in the original.

Have you personally bought LostWinds. How has LostWinds affected you?
