Top 5 Stories of the Week

If your past week has been a little bit too busy to keep up with all the important gaming information, then continue reading. These are the five biggest gaming stories that occured in the past week.

5. The game Batman: Arkham Asylum sets a Guinness record (August 28th) – This game received the title of ‘Most Critically Acclaimed Superhero Game Ever’. With a score of 91.67, it beat out Marvel vs. Capcom 2 which only averaged a score of 90.

4. A lot of stores are already selling the PS3 Slim (August 25th) – Although the planned date for the PlayStation 3 to be released to the public was supposed to be September 1st, many retail stores already began to sell them. The were able to do this because the delivery trucks dropped them off early.

3. Halo series may not be done yet (August 26th) – Bungie earlier had said that Halo: Reach was going to be the end of the Halo series. However, recent comments have led people to believe that they are not going to be done.

2. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 gets dualies. (August 24th) – Many of you are familiar with dual-wielding. For those of you who aren’t, you will learn to love it.

1. Price cut on the Xbox 360 (August 27th) – Responding to Sony’s price cut on the PS3, Microsoft matched the same price at $299.99.

Possible Wii Price Cut

While Microsoft and Sony battle it out at $299 for console domination between the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, some people begin to wonder how Nintendo is going to react with the Wii console. For all you deal goers, you know that $249  for the Wii seems like a rip off compared to what you get with the other competitors. Even though it gives you a new unique experience with the motion controls, the other features are pretty far behind the other two consoles including the horsepower and multimedia capabilities. EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich strongly believes that Nintendo needs to cut the price of the Wii down to $199.

He said: “Essentially, Nintendo stole potential PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 consumers from this hardware lifecycle three years in advance. In order to maintain this position Nintendo should drop their Wii console down to $199, not because the current Xbox 360 or PlayStation 3 pricing structure poses a threat; rather, because they will eventually pose a threat. Nintendo’s strategy should be to capture as many consumer dollars as possible while their competitors are still weak in their offerings to the casual audience and price sensitive consumers.”

At first thought this may seem like a pretty decent deal. However, some would say that a $50 price cut isn’t enough. Many consumers could easily be enthused by a $100 price cut even though everyone should realize that you are getting more bang for your buck with the PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360.

World Poker Tour Texas Hold ‘Em for iPhone

Even though poker is definitely not as popular as it has been in the past, there are still many players and fans of this game who are still dedicated to it. Hands-On Mobile is coming out with a game for the iPhone called World Poker Tour Texas Hold ‘Em. This game will soon be debuting in the App Store. This game is complete with online multiplayer and persistent profiles. On the iPhone,  many features have been Incorporated with the iPhone’s touch screen including flicking the cards if you wish to fold and you can place your bet by sliding the virtual wheel.

The first thing that will happen when you begin a game will be that the announcer, Mike Sexton, will greet you. This really helps for you to get into the game like it is real. There are going to be a couple of recognizable players at the table. One of these famous poker players you will notice is Chris Ferguson. There are a couple modes you can play. One is a single player mode fitted with free play and uses the last man standing setting. However, the more exciting mode is the online multiplayer. Since you will not be able  to read their faces, you will have to find your own unique strategies to win. With the online multiplayer mode you will be able to chat with the other players. Another mode that will be available occasionally is live tournaments. This will be a way for you to really test your skills.

For any poker fans, I strongly recommend buying this interesting and exciting game.

PS3 making no profit?

Word on the street is that Sony will be losing money with every PlayStation 3 that is sold. This inside information became known when London’s The Times interviewed the head of Sony, Kaz Hirai. This intriguing interview took place at GamesCon 2009.

After Kaz Hirai was asked the question on whether or not Sony will lose cash on every PlayStation 3 Slim that is sold, Kaz responded by saying, “If you’re just talking about the hardware alone, the quick answer is yes.”

Sony does not seem to be worrying to much about this problem though. Kaz said, “[Losses per console sold] makes good headlines, but I don’t actually know that that’s the true nature of the business that we’re all in, whether it’s PlayStation, Xbox or the Wii. I think the better indicator is to look at the business as a whole platform, to ask: Are you profitable in terms of the hardware, software and peripherals. And the answer to that question is yes on a gross profit level since the last fiscal year.”

All in all, Sony is going to be taking a small money loss on each console that is sold. However, they are overall going to be making a profit. Confusing? Yes. It was never made clear just how much Sony would be losing on each console sold.

Spiders iPhone Game

If you liked the action game Deadly Creatures, the game introduced to the Wii earlier in the year, then I have a suggestion of a game you may love for you iPhone. Like Deadly Creatures, the iPhone game, Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor, is of course a game filled with spiders. Besides the spiders, there is one other very unique feature. All of the art, which you will notice while playing the game, is hand drawn. The spider, bugs and background are all drawn out by hand. This adds a creative design to the game that you don’t usually see in other games.

One thing that has helped boost the amount of sales is the blogging about it by Harvey Smith. Harvey Smith, Arkane Studios designer, has been writing about Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor since it was released a couple of months ago.

This game uses the touch screen as you sweep your finger across it to make the spider move. The simple concept of the game is to trap the bugs you see on the screen in a web. You will quickly learn the best tricks and maneuvers along the way.

This game only cost $2.99. If you have been in search of a good iPhone game, then I strongly suggest you give Spider: The Secret of Bryce Manor a try. I can not imagine that you will not like it. It is a very unique game. Although you may think, “Eww spiders!” Well it may not look to be the most appealing game out there but a guarantee you will enjoy it.

Batman: Arkham Asylum

Releasing in the very near future, on August 25th, Batman: Arkham Asylum is a very anticipated game. Many people are looking forward to the release of this game. What is this game all about?

In the game, Batman: Arkham Asylum, the player takes the role of none other then Batman as he must deliver The Joker to Arkham Asylum. In the Arkham Asylum, the imprisoned villains have set up a trap. From here, a very intense experience of gaming unfolds to you. Paul Dini, the Emmy Award winning Batman writer, created an original script for the game. With this script, it really brings the DC Comics’ detective to life.

Batman: Arkham Asylum brings players in to a new, dim and exciting adventure that takes them all the way in to Arkham Asylum — Gotham’s psychiatric hospital for only the most insane criminals. Players will move within the shadows. They will attempt to cause fear in their enemies. Also they will confront The Joker and Gotham City’s most famously known villains who have taken over the asylum. In an attempt to end The Joker’s crazy plans, you will experiment with Batman’s variety of weapons and skills.

This action game, which is rated T, will be available on Xbox, PlayStation 3 and PC.
